   Proposal Description:
   The three clinical subtypes of frontotemporal dementia [behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), progressive nonfluent aphasia (PNFA), and semantic dementia (SD)] have distinctly different cognitive and behavioral presentations, but differences in functional deficits across these three conditions remain incompletely characterized. ??Mioshi and colleagues have previously compared functional impairment between FTD subtypes and reported greater functional decline in bvFTD relative to PNFA and SD. ??However, the relatively small sample sizes in their cohorts allowed for only qualitative generalizations regarding the different patterns of deficits in instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) between groups. ??The much larger cohorts of bvFTD, PNFA, and SD patients that are included in the NACC UDS will allow for more detailed and conclusive analyses of IADLs (via the Functional Activities Questionnaire) among these FTD subtypes. The objectives of our analyses will be to confirm that earlier and more severe declines in IADLs are present in bvFTD relative to the other clinical subtypes of FTD and to determine whether different patterns of IADL decline are seen in different FTD subtypes.??
